We are going to build boxes with finger joints.  The bottom will be recessed into dados in the sides and the top will slide in dados in 3 sides and ride over the 4th side.  Outside dimensions will be 12.5 x 10 x 3.25.  Materials for the top and sides will be 4/4ths poplar and will be furnished by the Toy For Tots Committee.  Materials for the bottom will be birch plywood. Materials will be milled ahead of the Box Build to the correct thicknesses (approx. 3/8″)  and if needed, boards will be glued up to a sufficient width.

Participation

The event will actually be a two day event with a Prebuild done ahead of the box assembly date which is scheduled here.  The Prebuild will be on Friday, May 27 in conjunction with the Toys for Tots committee and is posted separately.  The prebuild will consist of resawing lumber and finishing it to correct dimentions. Members are invited to sign up for one day or both days.

Safety

Use of equipment in the shop requires that the member has taken the Safety Class.  Individuals should bring their own eye and ear protection to the Box Build and any Prebuild activities at the Guild Workshop.

Work To Be Done

Activities for the Prebuild will be resawing and planing and can be done in each individual’s shop or at the Guild Workshop. If you want to work in your own shop, coordinate this with Bill Schuchat (wschuchat@gmail.com) ahead of time.  Materials will be distributed from the Guild Workshop. We estimate there will be 20 to 25 4/4ths boards to be resawn and planed.

Activities for the Box Build will be table saw and chop saw work to bring materials to the proper dimensions, routing for finger joints and dados, sanding, and glue-up.  Finishing with stain and shellac will be done if time permits. All plywood cutting will be done the day of the Box Build.  A box joint jig using a router made from Doug Stowe’s plans will be used to make the box joints. If you have a box joint jig that could also be used, let Bill Schuchat know as we may need more than one. Dados for the top and bottom to ride in will be cut on the router tables.

Interested members, who have not yet signed up, should RSVP via this registration page or contact Bill Schuchat with the following information:

  1. Willing to participate on May 27.
  2. Interested in helping with Boxbuild work on June 4.
  3. Have a box joint jig that can be used on June 4.
