Description: The class will discuss when to use this joint and several ways to make Mortise and Tenon joints. It will cover: 1) Layout a mortise, 2) cut a mortise with a mortise chisel, 3) drill out a mortise with a Forstner or Brad Pt Bit and finish with a chisel, and 4) cut a mortise with a mortise machine. We will also teach how to a) Cut a tenon with a Tenon saw, b) Cut a tenon with a Bandsaw, c) Cut a tenon with a table saw using a tenoning jig, and d) cut a small tenon with a table saw by nibbling the cheeks with a saw blade or dado blade. Use of a shoulder plane to get a precise fit between a mortise and tenon will also be discussed.
Prerequisites: Guild Safety Class, experience with the shop table saw, band saw and drill press.
Materials and supplies that students are expected to bring to class: Chisels ¼”, 3/8” and ½” sizes, 6” rule, dovetail saw if you have one. Note: A Dovetail saw will be provided by the Guild if you do not have one.
