Materials and supplies that attendees are expected to bring:

  • Apron
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Bag of finishing rags
  • Safety Glasses

Materials that will be provided by the Guild:

  • Assortment of oil finishes
  • Different types of shellac
  • Finish boards

Description:

In this class students will learn how to prepare wood to take an oil or shellac finish.  This will include proper scraping and sanding techniques in order to ensure a smooth finish.  We will discuss how oil and shellac work with open, semi-open and closed grain woods as well as how to deal with the common problems associated with oil or shellac finishes.  We will go over pre-conditioners, sealers and grain pore fillers.  Students will also learn how to hand rub finishes to include French polishing.  If time permits, we will also discuss tints and dyes to use with oils and shellac.
