Description:  This class will go through a “working” hand plane and set it up for taking shavings that will lead to the kind of surface we are looking for. We will go through the sharpening of the plane blade, make sure the mouth of the plane is nice and tight (for a smoothing plane at least), the sole is flat and smooth and free of nicks and dings that can affect the wood surface, and that the blade and chip breaker are set just right so that the plane shavings eject effortlessly.  We will discuss various planes and what they are used for and demonstrate good planing techniques .

Prerequisites: SLWG Safety Class

Materials that will be provided by the Guild: Everything else.

Other items Students need to bring to class such as tools: Bring a functioning hand plane. This class will not address the restoration of a hand plane. Also bring safety glasses.
