- Something to sharpen (chisel, plane iron etc)
- Board to mount laps on if so desired
-
Materials that will be provided by the Guild:
-
-
- An aluminum plate
- Diamond grits and ball bearings
-
Information from the student before class starts:
-
-
- Each student will be given 1 aluminum plate (~3”x9”) by default. Students will have the choice of a single or double sided lap. Instructor will need to know ahead of time if a student wants to use more than 1 aluminum plate. He personally uses 2 single-sided laps (600 and 1200 grit) plus a commercial coarse diamond stone when removal of lots of material is needed.
-
Send an email to Andy Clawson when you register for class if you want 2 aluminum plates. (clawson.andy@gmail.com)

Class description:
Each student will start with a pre-cut aluminum plate and make a diamond sharpening lap(s) that they keep. These laps can be used to hone the final edge after the primary bevel has been formed (via bench grinder, coarse commercial stone etc.). They function best with finer grits such as 600 and 1200 grit. Diamond grit will be embedded in the aluminum with a shop-made tool. We’ll also go over general sharpening technique and practice sharpening student-brought tools.
