The Faust Park Shop is open only to SLWG members who have completed their Safety Training. Minimum age for membership in the Guild is 16 years old. Children less than 16 cannot be Members and therefore are not allowed in the shop under any circumstances. Shop Monitors are authorized to enforce this major safety and liability issue. |

“Thank you for your very generous donation of handmade wooden toys. We held a special craft event where children painted some of the toys to give as gifts or keep for themselves. A number of toys have been purchased at affordable prices for the children whose parents cannot afford expensive toys. The dollars collected from the sales is used to purchase more food to be given out at the pantry.

Holy Cross Tool Project
Late Last Month, the Guild was asked to provide some advice and donation assistance in locating used tools or resources to support an elective woodworking class in a small Catholic School system. Holy Cross Middle School offers students an opportunity to be introduced to woodworking through the use of basic hand tools, power drills, sanding and finishing.
Todd Martin and John McClung have a strong relationship to Holy Cross and stepped up to coordinate a small tool drive. John’s kids attended the preschool in Shrewsbury, and Todd is local to Shrewsbury as is Kathryn Salmo, the instructor leading the new program. Todd Volunteered to be the collection spot for donations. The outpouring of support was nothing less that staggering.
This class is incredibly important to students who do not learn in a traditional way or who struggle academically. This is an outlet for them to be successful and create something that allows them to use their strengths. Particularly after COVID shutdowns and quarantines, young people have needed this. Kathryn will be our guest at this month’s guild meeting on Thursday 19th.
This is just another example of the impact our Guild and its members have on our community. Our Home-Sweet-Home outreach, the Toy Program and community support are a testament to our strong and healthy Guild.
Since Dec 20th, The Guild members stepped up and donated:
1 handsaw and miter box
2 Ryobi drills with battery and charger
1 DeWalt drill with battery and additional 4 amp hr battery plus case
8 tape measures
I set of clamps of various sizes (6)
24 safety glasses
1 set of metric forstner bits
2 compound squares
I set of 230 drill bits
Ear plugs …maybe 10 sets?
2 hammers
1 speed square
4 packs of drill bits, various sizes
2 packs of full sheet sandpaper
The Board would like to thank all of you who donated to this important cause. Later this year, Todd Martin will be visiting the class as guest speaker and will talk to the class about finishing techniques for their project. At the end of the semester the class donates a piece to be sold at the school auction. It has been really successful and the interest in the course is able to expand that to the support from Members like you!

| Started working on this built-in bookcase last March. Solid walnut. Had to shape my own crown molding. Had fun playing with the inlay work.

| I finally finished my router table and cabinet, after about 7 years of work. At each stage where the table gained functionality, progress stalled. The router table was on sawhorses in my basement for a couple of years. Then the cabinet got assembled and put on wheels in the garage. Several months later, the small drawers got done and then I had bit and wrench storage. This winter I made a concerted effort to finally finish the project. I have more router bit storage than I know what to do with right now, plenty of space for my router accessories, and some decent dust collection. Because the project took so long, I got a chance to see how I would do a much better job of making the cabinet carcass now, as opposed to when I started the project.

| I am planning to make a Mission style bedroom set (original design) for my wife. The nightstand is complete. Now, it is time to make the bed (pun intended).

The nightstand is made from QSWO and has a Blum undermount drawer slide. The secondary wood is poplar. |

I used the table saw method to make the drawer dovetail joinery. |

The door panels have mother-of pearl dots and black veneer inlay. |
 |

The casement joinery has 5 splines, 5 half laps, 36 dados/grooves, 12 double tenons, and 38 single tenons. I will be applying finish to the drawer when my garage gets warmer. The casement finish is a combination of dye, stain, shellac, and water-based lacquer. |

Collin Preftakes recently completed this oak sideboard. He notes that the design generally follows that of Gregory Paolini with a few modifications to dimensions, construction, and finish. |

Grain matching on the panels make a nice pattern feature. |

Woodworkers Guild Tree at the Shriners Feztible
There were many toys, bowls, ornaments and other items made by Guild members. Maureen (Shriner) said that the Guild tree was one of the more popular trees. She said many of their members complimented the variety and quality of the hand made items.

Toy Committee Update
Toy production moves along. We had a good selection of toys collected at the November meeting. It was a great ending to the year as we met out target for 2022. Time now to get started on 2023.
All woodworkers should be aware that we are donating these toys for children and that all toy donations must be fully sanded with NO splinters or sharp edges — ready for a final finish.
Call me if you need toy parts and I will bring them to the meeting for pickup.

HSH Table Build Community Outreach
If you have a table ready you can either bring it to the January meeting or contact me for pickup. You can drop your table by my truck which will be parked on the lower level next to the rear entrance of the Moolah Shrine building on Thursday.

- To participate in the Workshop Safety Class or use the shop, you must have paid the current year Guild dues and have your current membership card with appropriate marking.
- To use the Guild Workshop during open hours, you must have passed a Workshop Safety Class.
