President’s Letter – September 2022

This month has been really busy and I wasn’t able get much woodworking done, but I did buy a small 3018 CNC machine.
The 3018 CNC was easy to build, but not so easy to get running. The support was all done by email and each email took 24 hrs. to get an answer. Well, after two weeks of going back and forth by email, I finally managed to fix it myself. Turns out it was a Windows com port problem that I had to force manually.
The CNC machine only came with the program to run the machine so I had to find a free program to make the G-code. I found a program called Inkscape which was easy to run and make the G-code. But my G-code had errors and didn’t work correctly. I found CAMotics which turned out to be an easy fix. CAMotics lets me run the program on the screen without having to waste wood. And, yes, I wasted a lot of wood. Now I’m ready to try my first real project. Wish me luck, I’m going to need it!
We had a great time at the picnic. It was a beautiful day. Thanks to everyone who was able to join us. The St Louis Art Museum tour was interesting and informative. This month before the meeting I will be playing a slide show of all the pieces we saw during the tour. |

SLWG Annual Picnic
at Shaw Park and St. Louis Art Museum

|
The annual picnic this year was held at Shaw Park, followed by a visit to the St. Louis Art Museum to view furniture exhibits. The weather was great and a good time was had by all who attended. |

Bill Schuchat showed a #4 plane that he bought on eBay listed in “good condition”, only to find out when it was delivered that it had a broken frog. He complained to eBay and they immediately refunded his entire purchase price. However, he has had a problem getting a replacement frog as there were different frog designs over the years and finding the right one can be a chore. |

Sanding Technique for Ogee Raised Panels

I’m in the process of making a bookcase for our study. The bookcase will have shelving above for books and a three-door cabinet below with drawers inside. The doors will be raised panel style.
I’ve made raised panels on the table saw before but never the ogee style we wanted for this bookcase. My problem was, how do I sand the raised panel profile without ruining the detail. So, I did some research and found a way that worked very well.
The process involves getting a piece of 1” X 24” X 24” rigid foam insulation and cut off a few 2” X 4” blocks. |

| Next, you’ll need a piece of scrap wood with your raised panel profile. Spray on some 3M contact adhesive to the scrap wood and piece of 150G sandpaper and very carefully adhere the sandpaper to the scrap wood profile. Now you have a negative sanding form of your raised panel ogee profile. |
|
| Next you take one of the foam blocks and sand it into the negative sanding form. This will make the reverse profile of the raised panel profile. I had trouble keeping the sanding block straight, so I stuck on a 1/2” piece of wood to the sanding form to help keep the sanding block straight while sanding.
When finished you have a perfect fitting profile sanding block. Spray some adhesive to the new sanding block and some sandpaper and carefully adhere them together and sand away. It worked extremely well for me. |

HSH Table Build Community Outreach
If you have a table ready you can either bring it to the September meeting or contact me for pickup. You can drop your table by my truck which will be parked on the lower level next to the rear entrance of the Moolah Shrine building on Thursday. Also, in the truck bundles of wood will be available for table builders.

- To participate in the Workshop Safety Class or use the shop, you must have paid the current year Guild dues and have your current membership card with appropriate marking.
- To use the Guild Workshop during open hours, you must have passed a Workshop Safety Class.

The guild is now an approved charitable organization with the Boeing program. As an employee participant, your donation of $25.00 USD or more or the equivalent volunteer hours of 25 hours or more will be matched 1:1 by Boeing.
