President’s Letter – April 2022

FINAL WORDS – Thank you!
My term as President of this amazing organization is ending this week and I confess I have mixed emotions. When I first joined the Guild in 2015, I had recently left the Corporate world and wanted to have no leadership responsibilities. I remember feeling I wanted to belong to a service oriented organization and finally learn woodworking skills. |

| The St. Louis Woodworkers Guild was exactly what I was looking for. Well, I’ve still got a long way to go on my skills, but have always been delighted with the level of Community Service that is ingrained in the members and the organization. |
|
| It’s been a true privilege to lead our organization. We’ve accomplished so much, all through some pretty rough and unprecedented times. Membership grew, classes and programs prevailed, more members participated in activities, community service pivoted and continued, and we honed our remote meeting techniques. All of that was made possible by the dedication of our Executive Board and you as members. |
|
| I know the organization will continue to thrive and be in good hands. The next President and Board will do an outstanding job – as they always do. As I’ve said before, please consider getting involved in the areas where you have the most interest and passion. We want to ensure the organization continues to grow and meet everyone’s reason for joining. |
|
| So, in closing, thank you for all you do to support our amazing organization and mission. I look forward to my new role as Past-President and supporting the new President in any way needed. |

Members are reminded that nominations from the floor for open positions will be called for at the April Meeting after the Election Committee Nominees have been reported.
Members need to be present at the meeting to both nominate and/or vote for candidates.
Persons nominated will be invited to state their qualifications for the position at the meeting.

Hand Planes – Silent Auction
April Meeting!!!
One of our Members generously donated several high-quality Lie-Nielsen hand planes to the Guild. His idea was to have the Guild sell the planes and use the proceeds to benefit the Guild.
The following hand Lee-Nielsen hand planes will be offered for sale at the April meeting:
- No. 112 – Large Scrapping Plane – Starting bid $195
- No. 60-1/2 Block Plane – Starting bid $175
- No. 4-1/2 Smooth Plane – Starting bid $295
- No.’s 98 and 99 Side Rabbet Planes (Sold as a set) – Starting bid – $225

| Jay Noffsinger recently completed this large bowfront dresser in the Hepplewhite design. He will be at the April general Guild Meeting with additional photos and discuss the construction details as well as answer any questions from Guild Members. |

Rockwood School Program
The Rockwood School program for Spring 2022, includes the following volunteers: Paul Deutch, Jerry Bachman, Tim Boeddeker, Dave Windus, Wayne Humphrey, Grady Vaughan, and Bill Schuchat.
The team has made kits for the kids to assemble including airplanes, graders, stake body trucks, cable cars and front end loaders. The classes will be daily from May 2 thru May 6.

Bring Me A Book Team News
Michael Shipley, Executive Director of Book Book Go, formerly Bring Me a Book St. Louis, has informed the Guild they now have a free Book Bus Bookmobile and store front in Webster Groves at 46 W. Lockwood. They continue to strive to improve early childhood literacy and inspire children to read every day with their families. You can find out more at their website – BookBookGo.com.
The St. Louis Woodworkers Guild collaborated with Bring Me A Book and provided almost 1,100 Book Boxes that were given to children in underserved communities in Missouri and Illinois for their home libraries. We’re not building boxes now; however, Michael is planning on collaborating with us again on a new pilot project that will create handmade bookshelves for new reading rooms in area schools.

Table Build Community Outreach
The first batch of White Oak lengths were distributed to 15 Members on April 2. The wood will be used to build tables and nightstands for Clients of HomeSweetHome. Three tables have been donated so far this month.
We are in the process of cutting additional lengths now to have them available for pickup at the April meeting this Thursday. Look for the white F150 by the lower-level entrance. Please write your name and the number of bundles you take on the pad in the truckbed. Two (2) bundles make a small end table and four (4) are required for a coffee table.
Also, please share pictures of tables you have completed tmtierney@gmail.com. Or, send your pictures to grady.vaughan@gmail.com if you would like your pictures included in the Show ‘n Tell section of the Guild’s May newsletter.

- To participate in the Workshop Safety Class or use the shop, you must have paid the current year Guild dues and have your current membership card with appropriate marking.
- To use the Guild Workshop during open hours, you must have passed a Workshop Safety Class.

The guild is now an approved charitable organization with the Boeing program. As an employee participant, your donation of $25.00 USD or more or the equivalent volunteer hours of 25 hours or more will be matched 1:1 by Boeing. The maximum individual contribution is $6,000.00 or 6,000 volunteer hours. Your contribution is tax deductible as long as you follow three simple steps:
Step 1: Eligible Boeing employees or retirees first make a contribution directly to the guild
