President’s Letter – February 2022
First, let me say thank you to the several Guild members who raised their hand to be considered for the President position. I know the Nominating Committee is breathing easier and expect to put forth a great candidate. |
On a related note, as I mentioned in my last message, succession planning is an important step in assuring the health and success of any organization. I also know, from my years in leadership positions, it is critical to involve new, younger individuals in the organization. We are fortunate to have many new and younger members join the Guild in the last year. My hope is more of you get involved and find your woodworking passions. For me, it was the variety of Community Service projects. Over the years, those organizations and items we contribute have changed, but the mission has remained the same – to give back to the community. As such, we’re always looking for opportunities to give back. Feel free to let anyone on the Board know if you have an organization that you think we can help. |
I know we were disappointed the February meeting had to be cancelled due to weather and I just learned that our Superstar weekend had to be postponed because our star had to cancel. Bill Schuchat is working diligently to find another star for us. If you have any suggestions, please let Bill know. Until then, continue to to take advantage of the great classes that the Guild offers.
I hope you join me at our March meeting where some of our members will have a frank and informative discussion on CNC. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control. A CNC machine takes complex tasks and provides efficiency, accuracy and consistency that would be very difficult to achieve manually. There are many different CNC machines so come and find out which is the best one for woodworkers and why you should, or shouldn’t own one. |
OK– now for the fun part of this letter…John and I were fortunate to go on a two-week cruise to the Antarctic. We got back this past Thursday and are working diligently to put together a short presentation entitled – “What I Did on my Winter Vacation” to share before the meeting starts. I mean who doesn’t love a penguin? |
I will say, if you ever have a chance to visit the Antarctic – GO! It was such an amazing adventure and one that I’ll never forget. I know my pictures won’t do it justice – but will try. |

Hand Planes – Silent Auction
April Meeting!!!
One of our Members generously donated several high-quality Lie-Nielsen hand planes to the Guild. His idea was to have the Guild sell the planes and use the proceeds to benefit the Guild.
A Silent Auction will be held at the April meeting for some of the planes.

I thought I’d show how many toys could be made from a single 8′ 1×10
I got 12 standing cats, 12 little birds from the cat tail scrap and 13 elephants. (I had to cut around a big knot, otherwise I’d have had 13 of
everything) |
The cat and elephant patterns just fit across the 1×10 width leaving very little scrap, all too small to use for anything else.

Tall boy build
by Turner Handcrafted Furniture LLC
Don Turner
Got a request for a tall boy as a gift for a guild member’s spouse with a design idea provided by the customer. This design centered around a walnut frame and sides with figured Maple drawer and door fronts. The basic concept was based on this photo. |
From that photo some design ideas were batted around with dimensions discussed to narrow the design down. |
Also a rendering showing the drawers open and a dimensioned drawing put together before the first piece of wood is cut. |
The dimensioned drawing looked like this to ensure all the sizing met the customer’s desires. |
With all the decisions made, the build started with the walnut cabinet along with the CNC work to carve the fluted and flourishes on the sides of the dresser. The left photo is what the cabinet looked like dry fitted together without the internal dividers and drawer supports. The right photo shows the vertical detail with the carcass assembled but not finished yet. |
With all the decisions made, the build started with the walnut cabinet along with the CNC work to carve the fluted and flourishes on the sides of the dresser. |
Drawers were made of poplar as a secondary wood using half blind dovetails with the maple fronts integrated as part of the drawer front instead of a front piece with the maple part attached with screws. |
The piece was finished with an HVLP sprayer and a modified laquer for a hard finish with improved durability. |
The photos show the completed piece with the tiger maple drawer fronts, CNC carved moose in door and the walnut frame and sides. |

New Community Outreach Program
HomeSweetHome has expressed a need for coffee, end, and café tables as well as nightstands and shelves. As part of the Guild’s Mission, the Board of Directors has approved a new program designed to provide these furniture pieces to clients of HomeSweetHome. The details will be discussed at the March Meeting.
How the Program Will Work:
- Source 8/4 White Oak wood from provider
- Harvest useable pieces from 10’ off-fall in approximately 40” lengths
- Bundle and distribute (approx. 30 pieces) to HSH program participants
- Member to build coffee and end tables, café tables, shelves and nightstands from wood with sketches provided by Guild
- Guild to offer classes on how to build the various HSH furniture pieces to new woodworkers
Benefits of the program:
1. It keeps useable FAS 8/4 White Oak out of a landfill
2. It is a great way to hone your woodworking skills using Guild provided lumber
3. If you are new to woodworking, classes will be provided to teach the skills and techniques on table building
4. You will be helping to furnish a future to someone in need
If you are interested in helping with this project (designs, drawings, logistics, harvesting and/or build) please let one of the Board Members (Red tags) know or contact Tom Tierney (314) 412-1817. We are putting together a team (3-4) of Members to help manage the program.

Would you like to build some toys for the Guild to distribute next Christmas?
Train sets were suggested to us and this one appears to be something fun to play with and easy to build. A scroll saw is the major piece of equipment that is needed and our shop has a good one. The Guild can supply any or all of the materials needed for the build. If interested, contact Wayne Humphrey at wehumphrey@hotmail.com

If you are a current or retired Boeing employee you can now contribute to the St. Louis Woodworker’s guild through the Boeing Gift Match program. The guild is now an approved charitable organization with the Boeing program. As an employee participant, your donation of $25.00 USD or more or the equivalent volunteer hours of 25 hours or more will be matched 1:1 by Boeing. The maximum individual contribution is $6,000.00 or 6,000 volunteer hours. Your contribution is tax deductible as long as you follow three simple steps:
Step 1: Eligible Boeing employees or retirees first make a contribution directly to the guild
Step 2: After making your donation go to Total Access and click on My Community Giving – GIVE – Gift Match on the Boeing Gift Match page.
Step 3: Register your donation whether it’s monetary or volunteer hours and select The St. Louis Woodworker’s Guild and enter the total amount and the date of the contribution.
It’s that easy, you get a great tax break and it benefits the guild directly. If you have any questions, please email Vickie Berry at president@slwg.org and if I don’t know the answer, I will try to find it for you. |
The St. Louis Woodworker’s Guild is now listed with Amazon Smile.
AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support your favorite woodworker’s guild every time you shop at no cost to you. When you shop at smile.amazon.com, you’ll find the exact same low prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to the St. Louis Woodworker’s Guild.
Simply go to smile.amazon.com and select the St. Louis Woodworker’s Guild as your organization that you want to receive donations from your eligible purchases. Just make sure you go to smile.amazon.com instead of amazon.com. If you have any questions on how the program works, just send an email to Vickie Berry at president@slwg.org . |
