President’s Letter — January 2022

Happy Happy New Year to one and all. Another trying year has come to a close and my hope is in this year each day will bring us closer to the good ol’ days. All the Christmas decorations are almost put away and the skies are cloudy but I am beaming with excitement and happiness for all that is yet to be. |
|
|
| I try not to make New Year Resolutions because if I kept all the one’s I’ve made in my life, I’d weigh about 110 pounds, be fit and trim, wouldn’t buy any more yarn and stop hitting the “Place Order” button on Amazon. Instead, I like to reflect on the many blessings and good things I already have in my life and what I can do to keep them strong. Family and forever friends are always at the top of my list. Staying in touch by making a phone call or sending a note or card (not a text) is one way I like to let them know they’re important to me. In addition, completing acts of kindness on a daily, or at least weekly, basis is something I’ve found feeds my heart and soul.
I think that’s one reason I enjoy being part of this Guild – we are all alike in this way. I want to personally thank each and every one of you who so willingly give of your time and talent to make life a little better for so many. The list is too long to name you individually (like Santa, I know who has been nice) because so many of you volunteer to share your skills. To keep that momentum going, we’re working on new ways for you to participate in new Community projects and learn additional skills at the same time.
I’ve had a sneak peek at all the excellent programs and classes that Bill Schuchat is putting together for 2022 – I know you will be impressed. Every year we try and put together classes and programs that meet the educational needs of both seasoned and new woodworkers. This year we added 99 brand new members which netted out to a year-end total of 294 Guild members! I’m even more pleased to share that we’re seeing younger members joining. As such, there’s always a big demand for our Safety class, Fundamentals class and Shorty classes that are equipment specific. So, sign up early and often! If you have ideas and suggestions, please let Bill know. If you’d like to be a class teacher, Bill would love to hear from you as well.
Speaking of classes – we’ve got a woodworking superstar lined up for March 19-20 this year. Michael Fortune is a very skilled and popular contributing editor to Fine Woodworking magazine. It’s been a couple of years since we’ve been able to schedule a rock star like Michael so I know it will be an extremely popular weekend. I encourage you to sign up now as seats are limited to the first 40. Until then, we’ve got a great January program for you.
We’ve made a last minute change to the logistics of our January General Meeting. To ensure the wellbeing of our members, we will be “Zooming” our meeting so everyone can stay in the comfort and safety of your home. Craig Norsen of U-Pick Hardwood Lumber is our featured speaker. Craig has been in the lumber business since 1984, is a Certified Lumber Inspector and Certified Kiln Operator, and opened U-Pick to the public in 2010. Craig and U-Pick has been a long-time sponsor and friend of the Guild. He’ll be sharing his decades of knowledge with us in a presentation titled – Woodn’t You Like to Know . So, I know you won’t want to miss it. If you haven’t been to his store, it’s well worth the drive and I’m sure you’ll find more than you need for your next project.

| This is a sofa table that I recently completed. It has a curved front made by resawing and then laminating a board. The top is birdseye maple veneer on an MDF substrate, with bubinga inlay and then walnut trim. The table frame has some sliding dovetails to hold the structure in, and the drawer has hand cut dovetails. The taper on the legs was rough cut on a bandsaw, then finalized with a smoothing plane. The finish is one coat of danish oil and then several coats of water based polyurethane.

Adjustable leg holding jig for Jet Mortise machine. Measure out mortise once and cut remaking mortises without measuring or marking. Jig held leg tightly against the fence with consistent pressure.

The Rockwood School program restarted after a 2 year Covid hiatus. 42 toy kits were assembled at the Rockwood Center for Creative Learning on December 14-15-16-17. Bill Schuchat, Vickie Berry, Keith Lissant, Don Turner, and Dave Windus helped supervise. The kids struggled more than in the past after spending their Covid 2 years studying only online. The teacher wants to do the class again in the Spring so we will be soliciting volunteers again to make more toy kits and to participate in class supervision. |

Rockwood School District
Kit Building Activity
Guild members supervised the assembly of toys at the Rockwood Center for Creative Learning in December. I met with the teacher, Christina Berwin and established quantities of toy kits for Spring 2022 class which will be in May.
I am looking for volunteers to make the following kits for the Spring classes. These will need to be completed by early April. I have plans for each of the toys. Wheels, ziplock bags for each kit, and other purchased items will be made available for each toy kit. You will only need to furnish the wood. The planes, graders, stake body truck, and front end loader are kits that we have made before. The trolley and excavator are new, but I have examples that I have already made and assembled.
Several of you have already made kits for this program. New contributors are welcome. I can meet with anyone who would like to discuss details of the program.
AT THIS POINT IN TIME, I AM LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO MAKE KITS. PLEASE SEND ME AN EMAIL OF THE KITS AND THE QUANTITY YOU WANT TO MAKE. I WILL GET PLANS FOR THESE TO YOU LATER. PLEASE RESPOND BY JANUARY 20, 2022.

Christmas Toy Build (2022)
Members of the Guild will again this year be building toys to be donated to charitable organizations for Christmas giving. In 2021 members contributed more than 800 toys and we hope to better that number this year.
Because we are starting earlier in the year we will be working a different schedule. Fabrication will take place on the first and third Fridays of the month from noon to 4 pm. The first date we will meet is February 4th at the shop in Faust Park.
We are looking for ideas of toys to build. If you have any suggestions, plans, sample, or photos of appropriate items, we will be happy to look at them and possibly add them to the build list.

SPECIAL SUPER STAR SEMINAR
March 19 and 20
Michael Fortune will present a two day seminar on Furniture Design and use of the band saw in furniture construction. Michael is one of Canada’s most respected and creative contemporary furniture masters. He maintains a studio near Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he designs one of a kind furniture for private clients throughout North America.
He has taught at many schools and craft centers including and most notably in the Midwest the Marc Adams School of Woodworking in Indiana where the fellowship program for advanced students has been named in his honor.
More details of this seminar will be made in the coming weeks.

The guild is now an approved charitable organization with the Boeing program. As an employee participant, your donation of $25.00 USD or more or the equivalent volunteer hours of 25 hours or more will be matched 1:1 by Boeing. The maximum individual contribution is $6,000.00 or 6,000 volunteer hours. Your contribution is tax deductible as long as you follow three simple steps:
