President’s Letter – November 2022

With this being the last meeting of the year,  I would like to touch on some of the highlights of 2022.

  • Our membership numbers have increased quite a bit.
  • The monthly meeting attendance numbers are getting back to before covid numbers.
  • More members are viewing online and also viewing the recorded meetings.
  • We have a lot of volunteers for the Christmas Toy Program, HomeSweetHome and Toy Programs.
  • The annual picnic and Art Museum tour was well attended and everyone had a good time.
  • We had a large increase in the classes we offer.   A number of new classes are in the works for 2023.

As we look ahead to 2023, we are working to re-vamp our educational programs and need your input.   What is it that you, as a member of the Guild, want to learn?   Is it a woodworking technique, a piece of equipment or tool you want to master, or perhaps the design, measurement and steps in creating your own pieces?   We want to know!  Send an email to the President@slwg.org or VicePresident@slwg.org.

As a reminder, we will not be having a meeting in December.

We look forward to seeing even greater numbers of members taking advantage of our meetings, educational programs and volunteer opportunities in 2023.

Happy Holidays!

See you Thursday,

Brian Ellison

SHOW AND TELL

Editor’s Note:

The St. Louis Woodworkers Guild encourages its Members to share their projects in the Newsletter.  Please send items you would like to showcase in future SLWG Newsletters to grady.vaughan@gmail.com.

Dan Lender brought in a mother of pearl inlay piece that he plans to incorporate into a panel for a piece of furniture.

Charles Schrock pointed out how a few scraps of oak, cherry, and other woods can be made into nice little objects of art.

Visitor Tom Judkins showed us mallets that he made using ebony, black locust, and walnut, plus maybe some maple and oak.

Bill Meuth built these two slat top tables for the HSH program.
Tom Tierney built the taller table using an orphaned oak table leaf.
Daniel Williams built the round table.

John Vincini built the two smaller tables.

The larger table is the one Tom Tierney built shown above using the table leaf, now completely finished.

A friend bought a pretty sophisticated chef’s knife sharpening tool kit and needed a box that would conceal all of the components and would be nice looking enough to be left out in the dining room.  He came up with a two-tiered design which contained the working parts in the lower level and the various sharpening stones in the upper section.  I built the box with a grid to secure the stones and he applied the final natural finish.

I used hard rock maple leftovers from a mill flooring project for the 5/16″ thick shell and walnut leftovers from another project for the handles on the sides and top.  Each tier is rabbeted so that they interlock when stacked.

Grady Vaughan

Bill Schuchat has finished a book case, repurposing a cherry television cabinet that he built in 1988.  Another shelf will be added to divide the upper section, but this has not been made yet.  He cut the raised panels for the doors on his table saw with a jig that rides along the fence.  The doors were stained with a powdered aniline dye to match the original cabinet. The finish is 2 coats of shellac; then rubbed out with 600 grit wet/dry sand paper and waxed with Johnson’s paste wax.

  Toy Committee Update

Toy production moves along.  We had a good selection of toys collected at the October meeting and look forward to the November meeting projects.

All woodworkers should be aware that we are donating these toys for children and that all toy donations must be fully sanded with NO splinters or sharp edges — ready for a final finish.

Call me if you need toy parts and I will bring them to the meeting for pickup.

If you are a current or retired Boeing employee you can now contribute to the St. Louis Woodworker’s guild through the Boeing Gift Match program.  The guild is now an approved charitable organization with the Boeing program.  As an employee participant, your donation of $25.00 USD or more or the equivalent volunteer hours of 25 hours or more will be matched 1:1 by Boeing.  The maximum individual contribution is $6,000.00 or 6,000 volunteer hours.  Your contribution is tax deductible as long as you follow three simple steps:

Step 1:  Eligible Boeing employees or retirees first make a contribution directly to the guild

Step 2:  After making your donation go to Total Access and click on My Community Giving – GIVE – Gift Match on the Boeing Gift Match page.

Step 3:  Register your donation whether it’s monetary or volunteer hours and select The St. Louis Woodworker’s Guild and enter the total amount and the date of the contribution.

It’s that easy, you get a great tax break and it benefits the guild directly.  If you have any questions, please email Brian Ellison at president@slwg.org and if I don’t know the answer, I will try to find it for you.

The St. Louis Woodworker’s Guild is now listed with Amazon Smile.

AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support your favorite woodworker’s guild every time you shop at no cost to you. When you shop at smile.amazon.com, you’ll find the exact same low prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to the St. Louis Woodworker’s Guild.

Simply go to smile.amazon.com and select the St. Louis Woodworker’s Guild as your organization that you want to receive donations from your eligible purchases.  The AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price from your eligible AmazonSmile purchases.  You don’t make the donation, Amazon Smile does.  It truly is at no cost to you.  Just make sure you go to smile.amazon.com instead of amazon.com.  If you have any questions on how the program works, just send an email to Brian Ellison at president@slwg.org .
