President’s Letter – October 2022

Hello Woodworkers,  This month’s letter is more like a quick note.

This month’s program, Setting up a Small Shop, is going to be one we can all learn from.  The folks giving it have spent a lot of time putting it together and making videos.   I hope you all can make this meeting, especially if you are setting up a small shop for the first time or need to rearrange yours.

I had the opportunity to teach a beginning turning class this month for four exceptional wood workers. They caught on fast, got the basics down quickly and we even had time to make a spinning top.  The pictures in Show and Tell are of the class working and their finished candle holders.  This class was very popular and filled up fast.  We decided to open another class in December and it filled up right away.   If you are interested in taking this class please let Bill Schuchat or me know, and we will get another class on the schedule.

See you Thursday,

Brian Ellison

Bob Ryan showed a curved handle serving tray that he made from a WoodSmith website plan using cedar for the handles and maple for the tray base.

Alan Brown made this End Table using recovered white oak for the HSH Program.  Nice top design!

Tom Tierney made this Nightstand with drawer using recovered white oak for the HSH Program.  Notice the economy of wood used by piecing a couple of the top and side slats in the panels which adds to the design interest.

Tom also made this Nightstand where he finished it with a wipe on gel stain.

Brian Ellison’s beginning Turning Class and their first projects.

Examples of a coffee and small dinning tables for HSH Clients.
Dinning table base made from Poplar.
Coffee table builder is Charles Schrock. Tom Tierney built the dinning table.

Bill Schuchat is in the process of repurposing a cherry television cabinet that he built in 1988.  TVs are no longer square so a new one would not fit in this cabinet which has been sitting empty for a long time.  He is converting it into a book case.  Another shelf will be added to divide the upper section, but this has not been made yet.  He built raised panel doors for both the upper and lower sections and stained them to match the old finish.

The finish is 2 coats of shellac; then rubbed out with 600 grit wet/dry sand paper and waxed with Johnson’s paste wax.  Hinges have been installed, but pulls have not been obtained yet; probably will use brass ball pulls.

The cabinet was originally made with an open back.  To install a back, Bill had to cut rabbets around the perimeter, but found that the edge guide on the router kept hitting the shelves and top and would limit the cut to about 1/3 rd of the edge.  So the remainder was cut by hand with chisels.  Depth and with were marked with a wheel marking gage to keep the cuts aligned.  A mistake with the router left one portion of a rabbet too deep and required an infill patch and staining to match.  Hopefully the photo is small enough that no one can see this.

  Toy Committee Update

Toy production moves along.  We had a good selection of toys collected at the September meeting and look forward to the October meeting projects.

We made our first toy delivery to Hawthorn Children’s Psychiatric Hospital this month. They were very excited to have the toys to use in their therapy sessions.

All woodworkers should be aware that we are donating these toys for children and that all toy donations must be fully sanded with NO splinters or sharp edges — ready for a final finish.

Call me if you need toy parts and I will bring them to the meeting for pickup.

If you are a current or retired Boeing employee you can now contribute to the St. Louis Woodworker’s guild through the Boeing Gift Match program.  The guild is now an approved charitable organization with the Boeing program.  As an employee participant, your donation of $25.00 USD or more or the equivalent volunteer hours of 25 hours or more will be matched 1:1 by Boeing.  The maximum individual contribution is $6,000.00 or 6,000 volunteer hours.  Your contribution is tax deductible as long as you follow three simple steps:

Step 1:  Eligible Boeing employees or retirees first make a contribution directly to the guild

Step 2:  After making your donation go to Total Access and click on My Community Giving – GIVE – Gift Match on the Boeing Gift Match page.

Step 3:  Register your donation whether it’s monetary or volunteer hours and select The St. Louis Woodworker’s Guild and enter the total amount and the date of the contribution.

It’s that easy, you get a great tax break and it benefits the guild directly.  If you have any questions, please email Brian Ellison at president@slwg.org and if I don’t know the answer, I will try to find it for you.

The St. Louis Woodworker’s Guild is now listed with Amazon Smile.

AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support your favorite woodworker’s guild every time you shop at no cost to you. When you shop at smile.amazon.com, you’ll find the exact same low prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to the St. Louis Woodworker’s Guild.

Simply go to smile.amazon.com and select the St. Louis Woodworker’s Guild as your organization that you want to receive donations from your eligible purchases.  The AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price from your eligible AmazonSmile purchases.  You don’t make the donation, Amazon Smile does.  It truly is at no cost to you.  Just make sure you go to smile.amazon.com instead of amazon.com.  If you have any questions on how the program works, just send an email to Brian Ellison at president@slwg.org .
