President’s Letter – August 2022

Hello Fellow Woodworkers,

This month I’ve been finishing a Butler’s Table from a Bill Schuchat class.  I got held up finding the right hinges for the side table and then decided I needed a better palm router than the little cheap one I had just for trimming laminates.  I got a great deal on a Bosch PR20EVS, brand new, in a factory sealed box from Ebay for $55.00.  Home Depot has them for $129.00.  I was excited about getting such a good deal and really happy when I got to use it. It’s a great palm router.

My wife and I went to the MIDWEST SCROLL SAW AND WOODWORKING TRADE SHOW in Dubuque, IA.  This was a great show, I learned a little while my wife learned a lot.   We took an Intarsia class.  It’s just great to get someone else’s perspective on how things are done.

I got to see new equipment and some really good woodwork and spent some money on some little stuff;  we all know you can always find something to buy.

If you ever get a chance to go to a woodworking or trade show like this you should take the time to attend, it’s worth it.   Now that organizations are starting to have them again I’ll be looking for others to go to.  While we were in Dubuque, we decided to drive out to the Field of Dreams and got heart broken because they were closed for the MLB game that was on the last week.

Hope to see everyone at this month’s meeting where Joe Mendel, a Luthier, will be talking about making musical instruments.  This is going to be a can’t miss presentation.  I look forward to seeing you there.

See you Thursday,

Brian Ellison

Mission style coffee table contributed by Tom Tierney to Guild’s HSH Outreach program.

This is my third table for this great cause.   I’m calling it a mid-century inspired cafe table.  I got the design idea from a YouTube channel called “Bourbon Moth”.   On the YouTube channel he used a lot of Dominos, but I did it with dowels to join the legs.   It was fun to build with the curved legs and half-lapped cross braces.   And my first circular table top!

Roger Besancenez

Sideboard I built for our daughter. She chose the  style and color for the piece.
Red American Elm was used. The 5/4 rough sawn wood was purchased from Wunderwood. Two coats of Shellac were applied for the base coats followed by three coats of water based stain. Finally, six coats of water based polyurethane were applied for the top coat. All finishes were wiped on.

Tom Tierney

Dave Gronefeld brought in a tool chest and a tool caddy that he made during a woodworking class led by Wayne Watson.

Vickie Berry brought in several examples of river trays she has completed recently in walnut with gloss, semigloss, and satin finishes.

Vickie also showed off Bill Meuth’s Christmas Cart.
Brian Ellison brought in a table he made using ash and mahogany.

Keith Lissant had several items including a candlestick, coaster, and this hanging lamp with a globe for tea lights.
Tom Tierney showed a new design possibility for the HSH Program, a sofa server table.

Dan Lender created drawings for download HERE.

Paul Kennedy is a woodworking instructor who teaches instrument building and he brought in a dulcimer that he made.

Charles Schrock had some leftover white oak from building tables so he used some of the shorts to make this segmented bowl.

Bill Grimes brought in a platter that he made and decorated with butterflies that he spray painted the designs on both the front and back using an air brush.
Front side of platter.
Bill also showed a picture of a tool caddy he built for his lathe that doubles as a lathe trolley.  He has also built a combination CNC Trolley/Tool Cabinet/Dust Extractor unit and a trolley for his band saw.

Examples of toys that were assembled by Rockwood 4th graders from kits made by SLWG Members.

LESSONS LEARNED DEPARTMENT

I was tapering the table legs for one of the HSH Program tables and added to my experience base..

Lessons learned from this episode:

1.  When using a tapering jig, know where your saw blade will end up when it passes the holddown clamps.

2.  A full width 1/8″ blade has a much better chance of surviving an event with a SawStop brake assembly than a thin kerf blade..

3.  SLWG Sponsor W. D. Quinn Saw Co. can repair and resharpen a quality blade that does survive this event if it is not too damaged.. The brake cartridge only bent one shoulder and damaged 3 tips on this blade.  Much cheaper to repair than to replace.

Grady Vaughan

Be very careful of the placement of the blue holddown clamps on the Rockler (or any other) tapering jig.  Lining them up wrong can be disastrous.
This is the result of not paying enough attention to the placement of the holddown clamps on a SawStop table saw.

HSH Table Build Community Outreach

If you have a table ready you can either bring it to the August meeting or contact me for pickup. You can drop your table by my truck which will be parked on the lower level next to the rear entrance of the Moolah Shrine building on Thursday.  Also, in the truck bundles of wood will be available for table builders.

If you are a current or retired Boeing employee you can now contribute to the St. Louis Woodworker’s guild through the Boeing Gift Match program.  The guild is now an approved charitable organization with the Boeing program.  As an employee participant, your donation of $25.00 USD or more or the equivalent volunteer hours of 25 hours or more will be matched 1:1 by Boeing.  The maximum individual contribution is $6,000.00 or 6,000 volunteer hours.  Your contribution is tax deductible as long as you follow three simple steps:

Step 1:  Eligible Boeing employees or retirees first make a contribution directly to the guild

Step 2:  After making your donation go to Total Access and click on My Community Giving – GIVE – Gift Match on the Boeing Gift Match page.

Step 3:  Register your donation whether it’s monetary or volunteer hours and select The St. Louis Woodworker’s Guild and enter the total amount and the date of the contribution.

It’s that easy, you get a great tax break and it benefits the guild directly.  If you have any questions, please email Brian Ellison at president@slwg.org and if I don’t know the answer, I will try to find it for you.

The St. Louis Woodworker’s Guild is now listed with Amazon Smile.
