Toy Pattern: Grader 2

Tools

  • Band Saw or Scroll saw
  • Sanders – Disc, Belt and Orbital Spindle
  • Router with 1/4″ & 1/8″ round-over bits
  • Drill Press
  • Sand paper or emery boards

Material

  • 2×4 wood for body, blade, and engine
  • 5/8″ wood for front axle support
  • 1/4″ wood for engine base, cover and supports
  • 3/8″ dowels
  • 3/8″ dowel caps
  • 7/32″ tenon axle pegs
  • 1-1/2″ wheels with treads & 1-1/4″ smooth wheels from the Toy Committee

Instructions

  1. Make full size patterns from print of Grader parts by gluing to a piece of cardboard or hardboard. Cut pattern to shape. Draw shape on wood surface and locate various drill centers.
  2. Drill 7/32″ holes for axle pegs where indicated. Drill 3/8″ hole for blade turret.
  3. Saw body from the 2x thickness material.
  4. Round over all edges with 1/4″ round over bit.
  5. Saw engine from 2x thickness material. Cut 45 degree corners from top edges. Drill hole for screw through engine from top and counter sink.
  6. Cut blade from 2x material.
  7. Drill 3/8″ hole in top.
  8. Route curved surface at front of blade, then taper back edges as indicated. Round over all edges with 1/8″ round over bit.
  9. Cut engine base, cover and front/rear supports from 1/4″ thick material. Round over all edges with 1/8″ round over bit.
  10. Cut 3/8″ dowel to length and glue dowel cap on one end.
  11. Drill through 3/8″ dowel cap to create a sleeve.
  12. Insert 3/8″ dowel with cap through frame.
  13. Slide sleeve over 3/8″ dowel and glue to dowel just below the frame. Make sure dowel rotates in the frame.
  14. Glue engine base to frame. Blue front engine cover support to rear of cab.
  15. Glue and screw engine to engine base.
  16. glue rear engine cover support to engine base, then glue engine cover to the front and rear supports.
  17. Cut front axle support from 5/8″ thick wood and drill 7/32″ holes for wheel pegs where indicated. Drill hole in center to attach this support to the grader frame. Round over all edges with a 1/8″ round over bit.
  18. Attach 1-1/2″ wheels to rear of grader with axle pegs. Attach 1-1/4″ wheels to the front axle with axle pegs.
  19. Apply glue to the 3/8″ hole in the blade and insert the dowel. Leave 1/8″ gap between blade and floor so blade does not drag.
  20. Rub your hands over the entire vehicle to make sure there are not sharp edges or points. Remove with sandpaper if any are found.
